Hawaiian Tikis "Ticked" About Stadium Predicament

from the Malu aki Times

Less than a month away from first pitch and the Tikis are scrambling to play in a new venue. Early last week we first broke the news that the FLB franchise's home stadium on the Big Island was being shutdown by the USGS due to concerns over safety.

"They were worried about volcanic and seismic activity in the area." General Manager Daniel Delafoe said, "We informed them that we had been playing next to an active lava flow for years, but they just wouldn't listen. That's Washington for ya."

Playing next to may be an understatement. Just last season team officials had to temporarily close half of the visitor parking lot due to a lava flow which shifted nearly a hundred feet towards the stadium. The lot was later reopened after the lava cooled.

Today Pineapple Park sits just a mere fifty yards from molten rock.

"What people have to understand is that when this stadium was constructed over 50 years ago, it was already in the middle of a very active volcanic area. The park has survived half a century without major damage and there's no reason why it still isn't suitable for play."

The USGS disagrees however. They state that they have warned the Tikis for years about the risks of playing professional sports so close to an active geologic area, but only now were able to act on those concerns.

The announcement came as a complete surprise to the franchise ownership, who has been scrambling to find a home for the 2014 season ever since.

"It's really put our backs up against the wall. Right now we're confirmed to play at E Komo Mai Field on Oahu, but we're not sure how long that will last. It's not an ideal situation."

E Komo Mai Field is a WWII era facility that was built for servicemen and their families stationed in Hawaii. Just outside of Honolulu, its grandstand is covered but only provides permanent seating for a mere 950 fans.

"We have plans to bring in some temporary bleaches from the local middle school, and there's also the slope of the mountain right there which provides a nice grassy berm folks can sit on. Our hope is that we can get 6,000 people or so in here, but it's going to be difficult."

Difficult indeed, but if it all works out it should be one of the most beautiful venues to watch a game in professional sports with the Pacific Ocean just past right field and the green peaks of Oahu in the distance.
